Uh-Oh #2 From My Physical: Liver Damage?

I’ve been worried about my liver because I take a lot of Robaxacet pain killers for the back pain from my three ruptured vertebral disks. And they have lots of acetaminophen in them.

I take more than the recommended dosage of these pain killers every day. Wayyyyyyyy more.

Usually I’ll have 6 at lunch, 5 in the afternoon and 6 more after Jeopardy. Now and then I’ll take like 20 of them over the course of the day if my morning starts off bad.

I’ve been chomping on these things like this for five years. And I heard last week that having that much acetaminophen can damage your liver. So I got pretty worried.

I've Got Good Reason To Be Worried

Look in that right Code Abnormal column, the SGPT (ALT) value of 48. It’s high. ALT is alanine transaminase, an important substance in the liver that gets released into the blood when it starts breaking down. Which is not good.

My doctor says that my SGPT level of 48 is high, and a concern, and something to keep his eye on. But it’s not terrible, he says.

In some ways I’m relieved. I need those damned pain killers, even though they’re expensive. Even when I get the pharmacy store brand version.

Does that make me addicted to pain killers? I don’t know. I don’t care. At this point my organs are basically working alright according to my doctor.

So I’m going to keep taking them. That’s all there is to it. If the SGPT is a lot higher next year, then maybe I’ll have to try to figure out something.

For now I’ll just stick with getting the pain relief I need.
