Punishing People For Being Friendly

I’m on the ArcTrainer for about 20 minutes into my one hour session this morning and a pleasant woman who I often see in there comes over to the other ArcTrainer right next to me.

I guess as she was getting her water bottle out or something she saw the timer on my ArcTrainer at about 40 minutes to go in my session, and the resistance level cranked full at 100.

She smiles and says, “Man, you’re really a glutton for punishment.”

It was a nice thing to say, wasn’t it. In effect, complimenting me on working hard. A kind of kind-hearted encouragement. I should have said something back like, “No pain, no gain, right?” And she would have said something like, “Ya, no kidding.” And then we’d both

But me, with my big fat inappropriate mouth, I say back to her, “No, I’m just a glutton. That’s the problem.”

And that was the end of the conversation. That shut her up completely. I sure showed her who the clever one was, didn’t I.

She’s a perfectly nice woman. Late 30s. Been coming to the club for years. Why did I do that? She was just making perfectly innocent small talk, and I put a quick end to that.

So she put in her earbuds, completed her extremely intense 30-minute session (far more intense than me), wiped down, and left.

So much for small talk and human interaction.

I’m such a social moron. I hope I get another chance with this person so I can be civil. And normal.
